Safety and compliance by motor carriers have received significant attention since 2010 when the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) created a national database of the more than 3.5 million annual roadside inspections, 100,000 accident investigations, and other reports. The sheer number of motor carriers operating in the U.S., miles driven, and passengers transported greatly increases the probability of accidents, safety incidents, and violations of regulatory requirements. These risks can be managed and mitigated, but they require thorough and consistent programs and procedures.
